The story, which takes place over four days in the Similkameen
Valley of British Columbia, Canada, concerns Carrie (Lynn Redgrave), the depressed,
alcoholic, self-destructive widow of a native man. She is losing the cafe she has
been running, and the authorities are kicking her off the Indian reservation where
she has lived for 35 years. Her daughter (Lolita Davidovich) is moving away to keep
the grandchildren from her bad influence. Into Carrie's life comes a troubled but
charismatic young man (Tygh Runyan). Their intense love affair and its dramatic
conclusion liberate Carrie, giving her the means to continue her new life.
